Construction starts on Memorial Stadium expansion

If you have Husker tickets on the east side of Memorial Stadium, you'd better prepare yourself for some construction detours.
The east side of the stadium is being prepared for a major expansion that will make its debut in the 2013 season, increasing the stadium's capacity to more than 90,000. Trees were removed last month, and some seating in the adjacent Ed Weir Stadium and Nebraska soccer field were removed to make way for the new construction.
The hope is to have the foundation in place before the start of the season on Saturday, Sept. 3, when the Huskers host Tennessee-Chattanooga. Construction will continue during the season and into 2012, with the projected completed in time for the start of the 2013 season.
If you have tickets on the east side, you will still be able to enter and exit that side of the stadium as in past years. The Husker Legacy statue was moved to the north side of the stadium temporarily, and once the regular season is completed with the season finale on Nov. 25 against Iowa, steel for the structure will be put in place.

Gill not sorry his team won't face Huskers anymore

The man who led Nebraska to one of its most prolific offensive seasons in school history doesn't have a problem with not playing his alma mater anymore.
Kansas coach Turner Gill, who spoke recently at the St. Pius X/St. Leo's Sports Night in Omaha, was asked if he would miss playing the Husker football team on an annual basis.
"In what way?" he was quoted by the Omaha World-Herald.
"It best benefits us not to play Nebraska from a football standpoint. I have to look at what's best for our football team right now," he was quoted as saying.
Of course, you can't blame Turner Gill, the coach, for not being sorry to see the Huskers go. Fans with Husker tickets will remember almost annual beatdowns the Huskers put on the Jayhawks, winning more than 30 games in a row at one point in the rivalry, which was one of the longest continuous-running matchups in college football history until it ended last season.
Gill is trying to rebuild a Kansas program that had some success in previous years, but was slipping back into its usual spot among the bottom-feeders in the Big 12 Conference. Without having to play its big brother to the north every year, Gill has a chance to rebuild the program and make it more competitive in future years.

Huskers' first two Big Ten games on TV

The Big Ten Conference has announced its TV schedule for the 2011 season, and fans with Husker tickets will be able to see a couple of Nebraska football games under the lights this season.
The Huskers open the Big Ten portion of their schedule on the road on Saturday, Oct. 1, as they take on the always-tough Wisconsin Badgers. It will be Nebraska's first trip to Madison since 1974, when they lost a 21-20 heartbreaker during Tom Osborne's second season as coach of the Huskers.
The following Saturday, the Huskers host their first-ever Big Ten Conference matchup, and they will take on perennial conference power Ohio State, who will be making their first-ever visit to Lincoln to take on the Huskers. The last time the two teams met was Sept. 29, 1956, when the Huskers traveled to Ohio and came up on the short end of a 34-7 decision.
Both games will be televised on either ABC, ESPN or ESPN2. Game times for both matchups will be 7 p.m. Central time.

Big Ten commish compares Huskers to Packers

Their team colors are quickly recognizable. Their helmet insignias are part of the alphabet. They hail from a small market and have rabid fan bases.
Fans with Husker tickets should take as a compliment Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany's comparing the Huskers to the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, a comparison he made in a recent Associated Press article.
Delaney said the conference's interest in Nebraska went beyond geography and a shared culture with other schools in the conference.
"We're not the NFL, but the NFL has a very small-market team, Green Bay, and their games are national games, and everything they do is followed," he said. "The Nebraska brand has developed in such a way as other names like Oklahoma, Texas, Southern Cal. It's one of those programs."
Indeed, Husker football has developed an international reputation, with fans from all over the world proudly displaying the big red "N" anywhere and everywhere to show their support for Nebraska football and the Huskers athletic program.
Nebraska may not have the large population demographics of such cities as Chicago, Detroit or Indianapolis, but its fan base is deeply loyal and insanely supportive of Husker football, win or lose, wherever they might play.
The Big Ten Conference has a lot of tremendous fans within its big-market programs, but you can bet Husker fans will be as loud and proud when it comes to cheering on their favorite team – much the same way Green Bay Packers fans do every time they fill Lambeau Field.
