Is Bo worth the pay raise? NU says yes

Bo Pelini recently got a raise that makes his base salary of $2.775 million, which has fans with Husker tickets wondering if the powers that be at the University of Nebraska haven't gone off their rocker.
University officials want to keep their salaries competitive with the other teams in the Big Ten Conference that they will join later this year. His salary will become one of the highest in the conference, and there are also incentives that could make him as much as $1.25 million more if Nebraska were to win the national title.
Prior to the new deal, Pelini was set to make a little more than $2.3 million. Recent happenings in college football may have forced the university's hand in keeping Pelini in Lincoln, however.
It's no secret that the University of Miami was hot for Pelini during the offseason. Recent events at Ohio State University – Pelini's alma mater – surrounding coach Jim Tressel's mishandling of information regarding players who received tattoos and other items in exchange for team memorabilia make a potential coaching change a real possibility there as well.

Depth on defensive line is a good thing

For many years, fans with Husker tickets have been used to seeing a lot of big heavies on the offensive side of the ball. With all the Outland and Lombardi Award winners Nebraska has accounted for over the years, size and depth on the line has rarely been a problem on offense.
More and more, though, the defensive side of the ball is seeing a lot of the big fellas come to the forefront, and this year the Huskers have some great talent, along with great depth, on the defensive line heading into the 2011 season.
Three of the four starters are back from last year's team, led by senior All-American hopeful Jared Crick, along with Cameron Meredith and Baker Steinkuhler.
Crick and Meredith both sat out last week's Spring Game to nurse some bumps and bruises, and Steinkuhler is hoping to rebuild his reputation after being suspended for last year's Holiday Bowl. They'll have some help up front, with some talented young players stepping up during the spring season.
Eric Martin made a big splash after his move from linebacker to defensive end, recording four tackles and a fumble in last week's Spring Game. Thaddeus Randle also played well at tackle, forcing one fumble and recovering another.
The defensive front is the first line of defense against any kind of offensive attack, and things are looking good for the Huskers to line up some quality talent on the defensive front line when they enter Big Ten play for the first time this fall.

Stadium expansion to bring capacity over 90,000

The plans for the expansion of the east side of Memorial Stadium was announced earlier this week, and the project will be even bigger than was first proposed.
The $63.5 million addition to the Nebraska football stadium will include 38 suites and a third deck, with the top row nearly reaching the same height as the top floor of the press box on the west side of the stadium.
When all is said and done, the additional 6,000 seats will bring Memorial Stadium's capacity to more than 91,000, making it among the biggest college football stadiums in the nation.
Nebraska's ongoing streak of sellouts – currently at 311 games – shouldn't be in jeopardy when the facility is set to open in 2013. Paul Meyers, associate athletic director for development, said demand for Husker tickets continues to be strong and the record shouldn't be put in jeopardy with the additional seats.
The Huskers have not played before less than a packed house at home since 1962, and that streak enters its 50th year during the upcoming season, when Nebraska will begin play in the Big Ten Conference.

New era of Husker football ready to go

The 2011 season will mark a new era for fans with Husker tickets, as the University of Nebraska becomes the newest member of the Big Ten Conference this upcoming season.
The upcoming football season promises to be an entertaining one. It kicks off Sept. 3 when the Huskers host Tennessee-Chattanooga. Home games against Fresno State and Washington follow before Nebraska hits the road to visit Laramie, Wyo., for the first time to face the Wyoming Cowboys.
After that, it's on to the Big Ten portion of the schedule. The Huskers open the conference season at Wisconsin on Oct. 1, then face perennial power Ohio State at home the following week. Nebraska visits Minnesota after a week off on Oct. 22, then has back-to-back home games with Michigan State and Northwestern before hitting the road to face Penn State and Michigan.
Nebraska closes out the regular season with what should be the start of a hotly-contested rivalry with their eastern neighbors from Iowa. The Hawkeyes visit Lincoln the day after Thanksgiving for the regular-season finale.
