Eight turnovers lead to rare home loss to Iowa State

The last time Iowa State beat Nebraska in Lincoln, Husker coach Bo Pelini was still in grade school.

The Cyclones saw more than three decades of road frustration end Saturday at Memorial Stadium, as the Huskers committed a school-record eight turnovers in a 9-7 loss that dropped Nebraska to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the Big 12 Conference.

Nebraska seemed intent on self-destruction Saturday, as the Huskers turned the ball over four times inside the Iowa State 10-yard line. The ineffectiveness of the offense continued for another week, hot on the heels of a dismal home performance in a 31-10 loss to Texas Tech the week before.

The Husker defense did its part, limiting Iowa State to a touchdown and a field goal, and kept the Huskers in the game until the very end, when Zac Lee threw his third interception of the day with just over a minute left.

Nebraska has lost back-to-back games for the third consecutive year, and will need to get a win on the road to get off the losing streak before the big showdown with Oklahoma.

Iowa State enters its house of horrors this weekend

The Huskers hope to get their football fortunes back on track this weekend as they take on regional rival Iowa State this weekend. Saturday's 11:30 a.m. kickoff will give fans an early start to their football weekend, and you can get tickets for the game now at Ticket Express.

Historically, the city of Lincoln has never been particularly kind to the Iowa State football team. In more than 40 trips to Lincoln, the Cyclones have come away with just six victories, the last coming in 1977. Iowa State has won only once in Memorial Stadium since Bob Devaney became coach in 1962, and its only recent wins, in 2004 and 2006, both came on the Cyclones' home field. Their biggest win over the Husker football team in Lincoln was a 33-0 shutout...in 1899.

Iowa State comes into the game on something of a high, though, as the Cyclones got their first conference road win in more than two years Saturday with a 24-10 win at Baylor. First-year coach Paul Rhoads got the win after two heartbreaking losses to open the conference docket, a 24-23 loss to Kansas State and a 41-36 defeat at ranked Kansas.

Iowa State running back Alexander Robinson leads the Big 12 in rushing at 105.3 yards per game, and their offensive line has done a good job protecting the quarterback, giving up just seven sacks so far this season.

Nebraska needs to bounce back against Iowa State

After playing its most lackluster home game in some time, the Husker football team will need to find a way to bounce back after an embarrassing 31-10 loss to Texas Tech on Saturday.

The Huskers, quite simply, didn't come to play. That was evident in the first quarter when Zac Lee threw a lateral pass to Niles Paul. When Paul didn't come up with the ball, several Huskers sat and watched Tech's Daniel Howard scoop up the loose ball and start toward the south end zone. By the time the Huskers realized what was going on, Howard was long gone on an 82-yard fumble return that gave the Red Raiders a 14-0 lead, and Nebraska never recovered.

The offense, while outgaining Texas Tech 285-259, were their own worst enemies. Penalty after costly penalty came at the most inopportune of times, including a personal foul penalty with the ball inside Texas Tech's 5-yard line that ultimately led to a missed field goal.

The defense, which received their Blackshirts Friday afternoon, certainly didn't play at a level deserving of the honor. Although they were able to contain the Red Raiders, Texas Tech drove down the field at will on their opening drive, and did so again in the fourth quarter when Nebraska had cut the lead to 24-10 and still had a glimmer of hope.

Now the Huskers will need to find a way to put this loss behind them, and they will need to do so against an Iowa State team that is coming off a big road win over Baylor, the Cyclones' first in conference play in more than two years.

Missouri win a catapult back to the top?

Bo Pelini needed a signature win-- for that matter -- so did the Husker faithful.

The Husker football team got it last week, beating Missouri 27-12 in Columbia, the first win over the Tigers in their den since 2001. It was also the first win over a rated opponent since beating Texas A&M in November of 2006. 

The win has moved the Huskers into the AP Top 15, but the question is whether or not this win was a catapult back to the top of the nation's elite in college football?

Granted, the Huskers aren't in the same company as the nation's best teams, including Texas, Florida and Alabama. But this year's team has shown it can play with the big boys on the road. They came from behind to beat Missouri on a rain-drenched night on national television, and was one play away from a road upset over a Virginia Tech team that is currently ranked in the top five.

And, truthfully, the program, and the Husker fans, needed a win such as this. This program has come a long way from the dark days of the previoius regime, but it needed a big win over a high-profile team to make a statement that they are on the way back.

This is a team led by a passionate coach who demands the best of everybody involved. This program still has a lot of room for improvement, but continued success is going to bring the Husker program back to where it stood 15 years ago as the crown jewel of college football.

Burkhead out, return not certain

The Lincoln Journal-Star reported Tuesday that Husker freshman I-back Rex Burkhead injured his foot during practice Monday and will not play in Saturday's Big 12 home matchup with Texas Tech.

At his news conference Tuesday, coach Bo Pelini did not offer specifics on the nature of Burkhead's injury or how long he might be out. Other sources are reporting that Burkehead suffered a broken foot and will be out six to eight weeks.

A Plano, Texas native, Burkhead has been a welcome addition to the running back unit for the Husker football team, which took a blow with the departure of Quentin Castille prior to the start of the season.

"He's a good football player," Pelini told the Journal-Star. "Anytime you lose somebody you're going to miss them. I feel worse for the kid. Our team will be fine."

Rare weekend off for Huskers

Nebraska has a rare weekend off this weekend as they prepare themselves for their Big 12 opener Thursday, Oct. 8 at Missouri.

The Huskers have started the season in good shape, going 3-1 with the only loss a last-second 16-15 heartbreaker at Virginia Tech. The defense has shown improvement and played one of their best games last week in a 55-0 shutout of Louisiana-Lafayette, and the development of the offense under new quarterback Zac Lee is promising for a team that had some question marks on the offensive side of the ball at the start of the season.

Now comes Missouri, a team that has proved to be more than a worthy nemesis for the Huskers in recent years.

The Tigers are the two-time defending North Division champions and have had quite a bit of success against Nebraska in recent years. The Tigers have won four of the last six meetings between these two teams, and Nebraska has not won at Faurot Field since 2001.

Last year, the Tigers embarrassed Nebraska on their homecoming in Lincoln, winning 52-17. The Tigers are averaging more than 40 points a game against Nebraska in the last three meetings and come into the game with a 4-0 record.

This will be the fifth time Nebraska has played on a Thursday night during the regular season. Fortunately, the Huskers have never lost on Thursday and this will be their third Thursday night game this decade. Nebraska won at Southern Miss in 2003 and beat Rice at home in 2001 in a game that was rescheduled after the 9/11 terrorist attacks shook the nation.
