With history swirling around Memorial Stadium, the Husker football team put together its best performance of the season with a 55-0 shutout of Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday night.
Playing in front of the 300th consecutive sellout and a Memorial Stadium-record crowd of 86,304 fans, the Huskers scored early and often in improving to 3-1 with its final non-conference game. The Huskers now get 12 days off before a rare Thursday night game, as they open Big 12 play on Oct. 8 at Missouri.
Zac Lee had an efficient night at quarterback, going 15-of-18 for 238 yards and a touchdown and Larry Asante returned an interception for a touchdown as the Huskers posted their first home shutout in three years and won their third game over a Sun Belt opponent this season.
The Huskers got a pair of Alex Henery field goals and a Ben Cotton touchdown, as the freshman tight end recovered a Roy Helu fumble in the end zone for the Huskers' first touchdown of the game. Lee found Chris Brooks for a touchdown, Helu scored on a short run and Asante's 74-yard interception return gave the Huskers a 34-0 lead and they never looked back.
The Huskers racked up 433 yards in total offense and appeared to have recovered nicely from the disappointing last-second loss at Virginia Tech the week before. They'll get a week off before kicking off Big 12 play on the road at Missouri, a place the Huskers haven't won at since 2001.
Great seats are available for the Thursday, Oct. 8 matchup between Nebraska and Missouri right now at Ticket Express -- where no Husker football game is ever sold out.
