The Huskers were oh-so-close to pulling off a big upset Saturday, but came up on the short end of a 16-15 loss to Virginia Tech in a battle of two ranked football teams.
Five field goals by Alex Henery and a great defensive effort put the Husker football team in position to pull off its first win over a top 20-ranked team in more than a decade, but Virginia Tech used two big plays on its final drive to thwart the upset bid.
Nebraska appeared to have the game in hand when Zac Lee found Mike McNeil in the end zone for a touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter, but the score was negated by a holding penalty. Two more penalties ultimately pushed the Huskers out of field goal range, forcing them to punt the ball away.
The Huskers had another shot to put it away, but were again forced to punt and pinned the Hokies deep in their own territory. That was when Tyrod Taylor hit Danny Coale on an 81-yard pass to move the Hokies inside the Husker 5-yard line. Three plays later, Taylor scrambled and found Dyrell Roberts for an 11-yard score with :21 left to give the Hokies the win.
Credit the Nebraska defense for doing a tremendous job against a potentially-explosive Virginia Tech offense. Unfortunately, it was the Husker offense that let the team down, as they could never find the end zone and had to settle on field goals of 40, 27, 19, 38 and 38 yards by Henery.
The Huskers are back in action Saturday for their 300th consecutive sellout, as they play host to Louisiana-Lafayette. And while the game is officially a sellout, you can get great seats for this historic game right now at Ticket Express -- where no Husker football game is ever sold out.
