This Saturday, the Husker football team is back in action as they play the first of two consecutive games against teams from the Western Athletic Conference. They host San Jose State in an 11:30 a.m. matchup at Memorial Stadium.
The Spartans had to come from behind to win their season opener Saturday, getting a 17-yard pass from Kyle Reed to Kevin Jurovich with :08 left to beat UC Davis 13-10 at home. The Spartans rallied from a 10-0 halftime deficit to come away with the victory.
Reed looks to be the starting quarterback this week despite Saturday being his first action in almost four years, although Myles Eden is a more than capable backup and could very well see some playing time Saturday after his strong showing Saturday. The two combined to go 24-for-31 for 218 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensive coordinator Carl Pelini said on the Huskers' official website that the Spartans play a more wide-open style than Western Michigan and runs the ball well out of the spread formation. The Huskers had four sacks in their 47-24 win over the Broncos last week, and Pelini is optimistic they can get to San Jose State's quarterbacks and make things difficult for them.
This is the second time the Spartans have invaded Memorial Stadium. Their first trip to Lincoln was the season opener in 2000, a game won easily by the Huskers 49-13.
