Nebraska quarterback Joe Ganz is running with a pretty fast crowd after the Huskers' 38-7 win over New Mexico State Saturday night.
In the second quarter, Ganz pitched the ball to Marlon Lucky who followed his blockers to the right side of the field. Suddenly, Lucky stopped, looked left and found Ganz streaking alone toward the end zone. The two connected on a 20-yard pass to give Nebraska a 14-0 lead and take command of the game.
Later in the first half, Ganz took an option and went 33 yards for a touchdown, then connected on a 35-yard strike to Mike McNeill in the third quarter, giving him a touchdown running, passing and receiving.
Only two Huskers have done this in the team's storied history. The first was Johnny Rodgers, who pulled off the unique trifecta against Notre Dame during the 1973 Orange Bowl to cap his Heisman Trophy-winning year. Eric Crouch, also a Heisman Trophy winner, was the only other Husker to turn the trick, doing so during the Huskers' win at California in 1999.
Now we're not about to suggest that Ganz is going to win the Heisman Trophy this year after pulling off this unique statistical achievement. However, it was nice to see the offense step up and show a little creativity, which should give other teams a little something to think about the next time Lucky goes student-body right with the ball in his hands.
