There was once a time where Nebraska could hang with rated opponents. Of course, being rated themselves helped out more often than not, but up until a few years ago the thought of playing a ranked opponent wasn't that big a deal.
During the Bill Callahan era, seeing a ranked foe was about as close to an automatic loss as Husker fans have experienced in a long time. Nebraska was 0-7 against teams ranked in the top 10 and 4-10 overall against Top 25 teams during Callahan's reign as coach.
Nebraska will get a chance to get that monkey off its back during the next few weeks. Although Virginia Tech isn't ranked, they were a preseason Top 25 team and are good enough to play their way back into the ratings before next week's matchup in Memorial Stadium.
The next two games, though, are going to be real tough ones for the Huskers. Missouri is the defending Big 12 North champion and one of the contenders for a national title this year, and they will be coming to Lincoln looking to erase three decades of frustration in Memorial Stadium. The last time Missouri won on Nebraska's home turf, Jimmy Carter was president, the Soviet Union was winning the Cold War and people were complaining about gas prices -- at over $1 a gallon.
The third game against ranked teams comes on Nebraska's first road trip of the year on Oct. 11. They will travel down to Lubbock, Texas to take on Texas Tech, which is hovering around the top 10 in about every major poll. The Red Raiders have made quite a move up in the past few years and have a high-powered offense, along with a solid defense, that should make them a contender to win the Big 12 South Division title this year.
These should be great matchups for Husker fans to watch and support the Huskers on their move back up toward the top of college football's elite.
