Finishing strong after a slow start
San Jose State enjoyed a banner year in 2006, but stumbled out of the gate last year with an 0-3 start. The team finished well, ending the year 5-7, and will ride a strong defense into the 2008 season.
Chris Owens (75 tackles, 6 INT) and Andrew Ryan (51 tackels, 2 INT) lead a talented secondary on defense for the Spartans, and San Jose State picked up a pair of quality Pac 10 transfers in Jeff Schweiger (USC) and Coye Francies (Oregon State) that should step in and shore things up.
Leader needed at quarterback
Losing quarterback Adam Tafralis, who set a number of school records, leaves a big hold in the Spartan offense, but they have some pretty capable players who can fill in. Cal transfer Kyle Reed missed most of spring football with a broken foot, but should be in the hunt for the starting job with Jordan La Secla. Receivers Kevin Jurocih (85 catches, 1,183 yards, 9 TD) and David Richmond (55 catches, 852 yards, 3 TD) lead the offense, but the Spartans are in dire need of a running game.
Offense will need to step up
The Spartans will have a very talented defense that will make them very competitive in the WAC, but they'll need an offense that scored just 20 points per game last year to really step up. If they find a quarterback and develop a running game to open the passing game up, they could be a tough opponent for the Huskers in 2008.
