The Nebraska baseball team had an outstanding weekend, taking two of three from Texas to assume first place in the Big 12 Conference.
The Huskers spotted Texas four runs on Friday, then came back for a 14-4 win to take the opener. They rode the pitching of Thad Weber on Saturday, as the Friend, Neb., native tossed a two-hit shutout in a 2-0 win. Texas was able to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday, taking advantage of four Nebraska errors to take a 12-3 win.
In Friday's game, Texas jumped on staff ace Johnny Dorn for four early runs in the first three innings, but Nebraska exploded for four runs in the fifth to take the lead for good. Ben Kline had the key hit in the rally, as his two-run homer to left center gave Nebraska the lead for good. Jake Opitz added a homer in the sixth and Mitch Abeita added a two-run double to highlight the explosion.
On Saturday, Weber was simply unstoppable. He retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced in tossing his first career complete game, improving his record to 5-0 and lowering his earned-run average to 1.49. Texas had runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings, but Weber got out of trouble and kept Texas from threatening. Mitch Abeita and Craig Corriston each had run-scoring singles in the sixth to break the tie and lead Nebraska to the win.
Texas won the getaway game on Sunday as the Husker defense stumbled through four errors. Nebraska led early, but Texas got three in the bottom of the first and never trailed after that. Corriston was 2-for-4 and Cody Neer hit his first home run of the year in the losing effort.
The Huskers are 21-4-1 overall and 7-1-1 in Big 12 Conference play, 1 1/2 games ahead of Texas A&M in the conference standings. The Huskers play Creighton at Rosenblatt Stadium on Tuesday night, then host Texas Tech in a three-game series this weekend at Haymarket Park.
