The Nebraska baseball team completed its third straight series sweep over the weekend, getting a Dan Johnston two-run single in the 10th to beat Kansas State 5-3 Sunday afternoon.
Coupled with an 11-4 win Saturday and a 2-1 win Friday, the Huskers swept the Wildcats in the Big 12 opener for both teams, running 14-2 Nebraska's win streak to 13 games.
It was an exciting finale that saw the Huskers bounce back from a 3-2 deficit in the ninth to force extra innings, then win it on a two-out single by Johnston to get the win.
David Stewart got the rally started in the ninth with a double, then later scored on a sacirifce fly by D.J. Belfonte to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
Jake Opitz singled to start the 10th and moved to second on a sacrifice. After a walk to Bryce Nimmo and a stolen base, Johnston came through with the clutch hit and the defense shut down the Wildcats in the bottom of the 10th to seal the win.
The Huskers brought out the big sticks on Saturday, pounding the Wildcats for 16 hits. Craig Corriston was 4-for-5 with two RBI's and Opitz went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI's to lead the Husker hit parade.
On Friday, Corriston hit a sacrifice fly to break a 1-1 tie in the ninth and give Nebraska the win. Johnny Dorn pitched well in a starting role and got relief from Zach Herr and Erik Anderson, who picked up the win.
Next action for the Huskers is a two-game set with Arkansas, coached by former Nebraska baseball coach Dave Van Horn. Start time for games Tuesday and Wednesday are at 1:05 p.m. at Haymarket Park, and you can pick yours up now at Ticket Express -- where no Husker home game is ever sold out.
